The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has detained Ramon Morales Reyes, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, following allegations that he threatened to shoot former President Donald Trump.
According to DHS and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Reyes illegally entered the United States multiple times between 1998 and 2005. He also has a criminal record, including arrests for felony hit and run, criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct involving domestic abuse.
A letter attributed to Reyes expressed anger over deportations and included a direct threat towards Trump. The letter stated, "We are tired of this president (Trump) messing with us Mexicans - we have done more for this country than you white people. You have been deporting my family and it is time Donald J Trump get what he has coming to him." It further threatened, "I will self-deport myself to Mexico but not before I shoot your precious president in his head. I will see him at one of his big rallies."
This incident adds to a series of threats and violent incidents targeting the former president. In July 2024, Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Additionally, controversy arose recently after a deleted Instagram post by former FBI Director James Comey was interpreted by Trump supporters as inciting violence against him.
Authorities continue to investigate Reyes and the circumstances surrounding his threats. The arrest underscores ongoing concerns over security surrounding high-profile political figures and the consequences of inflammatory rhetoric.
