US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers apprehended Gurdev Singh, a 42-year-old Indian citizen, at the Port of Champlain border crossing in New York on Wednesday. Singh was wanted on child predator charges stemming from an active felony arrest warrant issued in Indiana.
The arrest occurred after Singh was denied entry into Canada. During routine inspection and verification through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), authorities identified Singh as a fugitive wanted for child solicitation and solicitation for sexual intercourse.
CBP officers took Singh into custody and escorted him to a secondary examination area to conduct a further investigation. Upon verifying his identity and confirming the outstanding arrest warrant, officers also discovered several bladed weapons among Singh’s possessions, including a sword and a hatchet.
Additionally, officials determined that Singh had overstayed his visitor visa, which had expired in 2016, rendering his presence in the United States unlawful. Following his processing by CBP, Singh was transferred to the New York State Police and is currently held by the Clinton County Sheriff's Office pending extradition to Indiana.
Champlain Port Director Steve Bronson commended the officers for leveraging national law enforcement resources and their expertise to apprehend a dangerous individual. Bronson emphasized that those residing illegally in the US, particularly individuals involved in crimes against children, will be held accountable under the law.
