The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that since January 2025, approximately 1,080 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States. The MEA highlighted the ongoing close cooperation between India and the US on migration-related issues, particularly involving individuals residing or traveling illegally.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "We have close cooperation between India and the United States on migration issues, including the deportation of Indian nationals in illegal status or traveling illegally. We facilitate their return upon receiving relevant information." Notably, around 62% of those deported returned via commercial flights.
In addition to deportations, the MEA addressed concerns related to recent changes in US visa policies, especially in light of the Trump administration's new guidance on Student and Exchange Visitor visa applicants. Jaiswal emphasized India’s commitment to the welfare of its students abroad, noting that ensuring their timely academic participation remains a top priority.
He remarked, "While visa issuance is a sovereign function of the US government, we hope Indian students' applications are fairly considered, enabling them to join their academic programs without delay." The comments come amid US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s directive suspending the scheduling of new student visa interviews globally, as preparations are underway to expand social media screening processes.
This directive, reported by Politico, is expected to tighten foreign student admissions by delaying visa appointments for F, M, and J category applicants until further guidance is issued. The MEA said it will continue monitoring these developments closely to safeguard Indian students' interests.
