Amazon to Reduce Corporate Workforce Amid AI Integration, Says CEO
Amazon's CEO, Andy Jassy, revealed that the company's corporate workforce is expected to shrink in the coming years as the business increasingly leverages generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This transformation aims to optimize productivity with leaner teams by deploying advanced AI tools across various operations.
AI as a Catalyst for Workforce Change
In a recent statement, Jassy emphasized that while some roles currently staffed will be scaled back, new roles requiring different skill sets will emerge. He encouraged employees to embrace AI by learning to utilize these tools effectively, experimenting with them, and finding ways to accomplish more with smaller, more agile teams.
Recent Workforce Trends and AI Investments
Amazon has experienced a net reduction of over 27,000 corporate employees since 2022, including cuts in several divisions in early 2025. The company’s global employee count stood at an impressive 1.56 million full-time and part-time staff as of March, supported by temporary and contract workers, primarily in its warehouses.
Extensive AI Deployment Across Operations
The company is actively integrating generative AI across internal operations, especially within its fulfillment network. AI is being used to enhance inventory placement, predict demand, and improve the efficiency of warehouse robotics, as noted by Jassy.
Industry-Wide AI Impact on Workforces
Amazon's move aligns with a broader trend in the tech sector. Several companies have announced workforce strategies influenced by AI adoption. Leaders have highlighted expectations for employees to justify new headcount requests by demonstrating AI capabilities first. Some firms have already reported significant workforce reductions, partly attributed to AI-driven efficiency improvements.
Building for the Future of AI
Amazon continues to accelerate its AI ambitions by launching innovative AI products and expanding its data center infrastructure. Jassy described generative AI as a “once-in-a-lifetime reinvention” poised to overhaul diverse fields, including coding, search engines, financial services, and ecommerce.
He concluded, "This technology is evolving faster than almost any other we have ever seen, helping companies save substantial costs and redefine operational norms."
