Asana Names Dan Rogers as Next CEO
Collaboration software company Asana has announced Dan Rogers as its new CEO, succeeding co-founder Dustin Moskovitz. Rogers, who previously led software startup LaunchDarkly as CEO, will officially take the helm on July 21.
Leadership Transition and Background
Moskovitz, who co-founded Facebook's parent company before launching Asana in 2008, revealed plans to retire earlier this year but will continue supporting the company as chair of its board of directors. His decision comes at a pivotal time as Asana intensifies efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into its products, with its AI Studio already generating over $1 million in annualized revenue.
Reflecting on the change, Moskovitz stated, "This moment represents an unprecedented opportunity for AI to evolve the way people work, and Dan is the leader with the experience, vision, and expertise needed to guide Asana into its next chapter."
Dan Rogers: A Track Record in Tech Leadership
Before joining LaunchDarkly in 2023, Rogers served as president of data management firm Rubrik for three years. His executive experience also includes marketing leadership roles at ServiceNow and Symantec, as well as positions at other tech companies such as Web Services.
At LaunchDarkly, a startup focusing on feature management and code delivery, Rogers helped scale the business effectively during his tenure.
Compensation and Company Performance
While Moskovitz has taken a nominal compensation approach—earning just $5 over the past five fiscal years despite an estimated net worth exceeding $11 billion—Rogers will receive a $650,000 base salary, $35 million in restricted stock units, and a potential $650,000 annual bonus.
Following its 2020 public listing via a direct listing, Asana’s stock soared during the pandemic alongside other software firms but has since softened. Shares closed recently at $12.93, down from a peak of $142.68 in November 2021. Moskovitz owns approximately 39% of the company’s outstanding shares.
LaunchDarkly Prepares for Leadership Shift
With Rogers’ departure, LaunchDarkly announced that Chief Revenue Officer Marcus Holm will step up as president. Additionally, the company’s co-founder and former CEO will assume a more active role while the board searches for a new chief executive.
A spokesperson acknowledged Rogers' impact, stating, "We're grateful for the leadership Dan has brought to LaunchDarkly and the role he's played in helping scale the business."
