Government Confirms Mujibur Rahman's Status as Freedom Fighter
The interim government of Bangladesh has officially affirmed that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, widely known as 'Bangabandhu', continues to be recognized as a Muktijoddha or freedom fighter. This clarification comes amid recent circulation of reports suggesting otherwise.
Clarification on Recent Media Reports
Contrary to earlier media reports claiming that Sheikh Mujib's name was removed from the freedom fighter category, Faruk-e-Azam, advisor to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, stated that Rahman, along with approximately 400 other leaders mentioned, maintain their status as Muktijoddha.
Azam further explained that, under the JAMUKA (National Freedom Fighters’ Council) ordinance, diplomats and individuals connected with the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra are also classified as associate freedom fighters. This designation does not diminish the respect or honor accorded to these individuals.
Understanding the Freedom Fighters’ Designation
A Bir Muktijoddha is an individual who, between March 26 and December 16, 1971, engaged in formal training within Bangladesh’s villages or crossed into India to join training camps, actively participating in the Liberation War against Pakistani forces to secure Bangladesh’s independence. This status serves as official recognition of their vital role in the country’s struggle for freedom.
Change in Currency Design Provokes Discussions
Adding to the recent stir, Bangladesh introduced new banknotes that no longer feature the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Instead, the redesigned currency highlights natural landscapes and traditional landmarks of the country. Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khana remarked, "Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits, but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks."
Summary of Key Points
- Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s status as a freedom fighter remains officially intact.
- Approximately 400 leaders named in reports also retain their Muktijoddha recognition.
- JAMUKA ordinance includes diplomats and broadcast associates as freedom fighters without reduced honor.
