During Field Marshal Asim Munir's visit to Balochistan's capital Quetta, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a banned separatist group, claimed control of Surab city in the province, marking a significant challenge to the Pakistani military’s authority in the region.
While addressing the Command and Staff College, Munir emphasized Pakistan’s stance favoring a peaceful resolution of the longstanding Kashmir dispute. He condemned India’s recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, labeling it as "unlawful and legally untenable hydro-terrorism." The Pakistani Army Chief reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to counter any aggression and threats comprehensively and underlined the importance of strategic stability in South Asia through peaceful dialogue.
Meanwhile, the BLA’s capture of Surab city coincided with Munir’s speech, reflecting the group’s intensified insurgency in Balochistan. The separatist faction has increased its activities considerably, aiming to undermine Pakistani military control and assert its influence in the region.
The BLA’s ongoing campaign, known as Operation Herof, initiated in August 2024, is regarded as the most extensive and coordinated armed effort by Baloch insurgents. The group reported conducting 71 attacks across 51 locations during recent Indo-Pak tensions. Apart from opposing Pakistani governance, the BLA has also targeted Chinese interests in Balochistan, mounting attacks against Chinese entities present in the province.
Field Marshal Munir highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and extremism, affirming confidence in achieving enduring success against such threats.
