Chinese Ambassador Expresses Optimism on Future India-China Relations
Chinese ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, recently voiced hopeful sentiments about the future of bilateral relations, emphasizing the profound historical connections that unite the two nations. Speaking at a cultural event in Kolkata, Xu highlighted that both India and China share civilizations spanning thousands of years, during which they enjoyed predominantly amicable interactions.
Acknowledging Shared History and Forward Vision
Xu underscored that despite some contemporary challenges, including ongoing border tensions, the longstanding relationship between the countries overwhelmingly reflects cooperation and friendship. Referencing remarks by the Indian Prime Minister that periods of discord are relatively brief episodes, Xu urged a focus on mutual advancement and the younger generation’s role in forging stronger ties.
“We should look forward, look to the future — especially the young people today,” the ambassador stated, calling for a forward-looking mindset in diplomacy and cross-cultural engagement.
Collaborative Efforts Across Society
When asked if the hope for warmer ties extends to resolving border disputes, Xu was optimistic. He stressed that solution requires collective effort, not only from governments but also from think tanks, students, and academic institutions on both sides.
Highlighting a recent consensus between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping to nurture good neighborly relations, Xu said, “I am expecting that new development will be taking shape in the coming time.”
Promoting Youth Engagement and Connectivity
As part of fostering closer people-to-people connections, Xu announced plans for a youth exchange program where young Indians will visit several Chinese cities, including Beijing. The ambassador sees the youth as a cornerstone for sustaining improved ties.
Xu also expressed hope that direct flights between India and China, suspended since 2020, will resume soon, facilitating easier travel and cultural exchange.
Marking a Milestone Amid Diplomatic Challenges
The year 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of India-China diplomatic relations. Xu described the current period as a "critical stage" for the partnership, signaling a pivotal opportunity to deepen cooperation despite difficulties.
Reflecting on the event’s recognition of Indian students, the ambassador noted, “The young generation is the hope of the two countries. So we should believe that in the future our relationships will be better and better.”
In summary, Ambassador Xu Feihong’s remarks underscore a blend of historical pride and cautious optimism. By encouraging inclusive efforts across governmental and societal levels, and by championing youth involvement, both nations seem poised to navigate their differences and embrace a more collaborative future.
