PM Modi Invited to G7 Summit in Canada
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to participate in the upcoming G7 summit scheduled from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Canada. This invitation marks a significant step towards mending the diplomatic relationship between India and Canada, which had experienced considerable strain in recent years.
Renewed Diplomatic Engagement
PM Modi expressed his anticipation for constructive dialogue with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who extended the invitation following his election victory. Modi emphasized the importance of mutual respect and shared interests as the foundation for revitalized cooperation between the two nations.
In his statement, PM Modi said:
"Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit."
Background of India-Canada Relations
The relationship between India and Canada faced considerable challenges in 2023. The situation escalated following unsubstantiated allegations from the former Canadian Prime Minister accusing Indian agents of involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has consistently denied these claims and demanded evidence, which has not been provided.
The tensions peaked further when the Indian High Commissioner in Canada was declared a "person of interest" in investigations relating to the killing. India condemned the move as unfounded, responding by recalling its High Commissioner and several diplomats, and expelling six Canadian officials, including the acting Canadian High Commissioner.
Signs of Improvement Post-Election
Relations began to improve following the resignation of the former Canadian Prime Minister and the subsequent election of Mark Carney. Despite belonging to the same Liberal Party, Carney has taken a more conciliatory approach, highlighting the importance of India-Canada ties and advocating for resolving differences through mutual respect.
The invitation to PM Modi is widely viewed as a positive gesture toward restoring collaboration and as a counter to demands from Khalistani groups in Canada to exclude India’s leader from attending the summit.
Looking Ahead
The G7 summit in Kananaskis presents an opportunity for India and Canada to rebuild diplomatic bridges and enhance strategic dialogue amid growing global challenges. Both leaders are expected to discuss key bilateral and multilateral issues, reinforcing their countries’ long-standing democratic values and people-to-people connections.
