At least 29 children lost their lives and over 250 others were injured following a catastrophic explosion and subsequent stampede at Barthelemy Boganda High School in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. The harrowing incident unfolded amid the second day of the baccalaureate exams, a critical testing period for more than 5,300 students.

Explosion Sparks Panic During Exam Day

The explosion originated from an electrical transformer on school grounds. Authorities reported the blast occurred as efforts were underway to restore power to a malfunctioning transformer. The sudden and violent blast ignited widespread panic, triggering a stampede among students desperate to escape the chaos.

Stampede Causes Majority of Casualties

According to the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Health, most fatalities resulted from the frantic stampede rather than the explosion itself. At the scene, 16 of the deceased were girls. Numerous others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to nearby hospitals. In total, emergency responders transported approximately 260 injured students to medical facilities for urgent care.
