Historic Agreement to Protect St. Catherine's Monastery
Egypt and Greece have reached a significant agreement to safeguard the status of St. Catherine's Monastery, one of the oldest Christian worship sites located at the foot of Mount Sinai in Egypt. This accord follows a recent Egyptian court ruling that placed the monastery's land use under scrutiny, raising concerns among the monastery’s caretakers and the international community.
Significance of St. Catherine’s Monastery
Founded in the 6th century, St. Catherine's Monastery is recognized as the oldest Christian monastery still functioning in its original capacity. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its historical, spiritual, and cultural importance. The monastery holds a revered position across Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faiths, situated near a site traditionally believed to be where Moses received the Ten Commandments.
Details of the Court Ruling and Diplomatic Response
Last week, an Egyptian court issued a ruling instructing Orthodox monks to vacate several plots of land historically used by them, including vineyards and gardens adjacent to the monastery. The court deemed these lands as illegally sequestered, which triggered diplomatic discussions between Cairo and Athens to address the monastery's future legal and operational status.
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis emphasized the mutual intent to protect the monastery's rights and its Greek Orthodox religious character during talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. Both ministers expressed their commitment to maintaining the monastery's long-standing tradition and spiritual significance.
Minister Abdelatty confirmed that the ruling would preserve the monastery’s sacred standing and assured that monks would retain access to and continued use of the monastery and its associated sites.
Historical and Cultural Importance
The monastery complex encompasses sacred landmarks, including the traditional site of the burning bush mentioned in biblical texts. It also houses one of the world’s richest collections of early Christian manuscripts in its ancient library.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
This agreement exemplifies the ongoing strong diplomatic ties and deepening cooperation between Egypt and Greece, highlighting their shared interest in protecting cultural heritage and religious landmarks.
