World Environment Day Celebrated with Plantations and Awareness in Tiruchi
On June 5, 2025, Tiruchi observed World Environment Day with a series of environmental activities including tree plantation drives, educational programs, and pledges to adopt sustainable practices.
Mass Plantation Drive at BHEL Tiruchi
The celebration commenced at the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) Tiruchi complex, where S. Prabhakar, Executive Director, along with senior management officials, inaugurated a large-scale plantation event within the factory premises. Emphasizing environmental conservation, Mr. Prabhakar called on participants to commit to a plastic-free lifestyle and adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
Community Efforts and Native Tree Plantations
Volunteers from the Thanneer organisation actively contributed by planting native saplings such as navel, neem, mango, and magizham in various city locations, including Ambedkar Hall in Ponmalai and local school campuses.
An awareness event at the Corporation Elementary School in Edamalaipattipudur included sapling distribution and a pledge ceremony led by community leader K. C. Neelamegam.
Engaging Students in Environmental Awareness
The non-profit organisation VOICE Trust conducted a program at the Government Higher Secondary School in Lalgudi, where approximately 180 students participated. Forest Ranger Officer T. Krishnan urged the students to use cloth bags and reusable vessels to combat plastic pollution. The event also featured the distribution of tree saplings and cloth bags to support sustainable habits among the youth.
Plantation and Cleanliness Drive at Jailpettai
People's Development Initiatives (PDI), supported by the Azim Premji Foundation, led a plantation and cleanliness drive at the Jailpettai tenements. Community members including youth, women, and representatives of the Jail Pettai Area Residents’ Welfare Association worked together to clear accumulated garbage and plant around 35 saplings of various indigenous species such as neem, peru nelli, iyal vaagai, pungai, and vilvam. Key participants included I. Ambalavanan, Director of PDI, and welfare association president Ponnusamy.
District-wide Environmental Activities
In addition to city-level events, senior officials and district collectors launched numerous tree planting initiatives and awareness programs across the central districts, promoting widespread community involvement in environmental conservation.
