World Environment Day Celebrations in Kochi
On June 5, 2025, Kochi marked World Environment Day with a series of greening and environmental initiatives across the city. Activities centered around tree planting, creation of green spaces, and waste management efforts aimed at fostering sustainability and environmental awareness.
Archdiocese and City Corporation Collaborate on Sapling Planting
At the Varapuzha Archdiocese headquarters, Archbishop Joseph Kalathiparambil handed over vetiver saplings to Kochi Mayor M. Anilkumar. These saplings are intended for planting at the Brahmapuram waste dumping site, where recent biomining operations were conducted to clear accumulated waste heaps.
During the event, the Mayor also inaugurated the Varapuzha Archdiocese’s cleanup and environmental initiatives, highlighting the city's commitment to environmental restoration.
Maradu Municipality Establishes Green Islet
Maradu municipal authorities launched a green islet featuring various fruit tree saplings near the local material collection facility by the 16th division. Municipal Chairperson Antony Ashanparambil personally planted several saplings, emphasizing community involvement in urban greening efforts.
Kakkanad Civil Station Green Islet Project
The District Collector, N.S.K Umesh, inaugurated a green islet project on the civil station premises in Kakkanad. The initiative involves planting traditional fruit trees on approximately four cents of land and is a collaborative effort between the district administration, Haritha Keralam Mission, Thrikkakara municipality, and the Rotary Club.
Educational Institutions Promote Tree Exchange and Environmental Awareness
The ‘Changathikkoru Maram’ (A Tree for a Friend) project was launched at Don Bosco Senior Secondary School as part of a joint program by Haritha Keralam Mission and the Kochi Corporation. In this initiative, students exchanged tree saplings to encourage community participation in reforestation.
Additionally, St. Teresa’s College hosted an event organized by the Bhoomitra Sena Club, Department of Zoology, and NSS Unit 41. Central to the event was the launch of the "YouCanHeal" dashboard app, created by students specializing in computer applications. This application, recognized by the Department of Environment and Climate Change and Kochi Corporation, aims to raise environmental awareness aligned with the event’s theme: Beat Plastic Pollution and Promote Renewable Energy.
