PM Modi Flags Off 200 Electric Buses on World Environment Day
On World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 200 electric buses in Delhi, underscoring the government’s commitment to sustainable urban transportation and environmental conservation.
Commitment to a Clean and Green Delhi
The Prime Minister highlighted that this initiative aims to contribute significantly towards building a cleaner and greener Delhi. He emphasized that expanding electric bus services will improve the Ease of Living for the city’s residents by promoting clean, efficient, and sustainable mobility.
In his statement, PM Modi said, “Building a clean and green Delhi! Flagged off electric buses under an initiative of the Delhi government aimed at boosting sustainable development and clean urban mobility.”
Event Attendees and Supporting Initiatives
The launch event saw the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, and Union Minister of Environment Bhupender Yadav. The Prime Minister also planted a sapling at Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park as part of the ‘Ek ped Ma ke Naam’ initiative, which supports the Aravalli Green Wall project — a reforestation effort along the 700-km Aravalli range.
Minister Bhupender Yadav remarked that the electric buses symbolize India’s collective commitment to sustainable development and clean urban transport.
Enhancing Delhi’s Public Transport Fleet
- The Delhi Transport Corporation currently operates a fleet of 3,266 buses, comprising 1,895 electric and 1,371 CNG buses.
- The addition of 200 new electric buses raises the electric fleet count to 2,095 buses.
- By the end of 2025, the total number of public transport buses in Delhi will reach 2,080 electric buses as per the latest targets.
- Delhi’s government plans to transition its entire public transport fleet to electric by 2027.
Additionally, a new electric vehicle policy is expected to be implemented soon to support and accelerate this transition.
Delhi Government’s Vision for Sustainable Urban Mobility
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta thanked the Prime Minister for the support and encouragement, reiterating the state government’s resolve to build a cleaner, greener, and more future-ready capital city that aligns with the goals of a developed India — balancing progress with environmental stewardship.
This large-scale deployment of electric buses marks a significant step towards reducing urban pollution and promoting sustainable development in the National Capital Region.
