New Delhi, May 29, 2025: Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has announced the conclusion of his tenure in the position. Musk expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for the opportunity to tackle wasteful government spending through the initiative.
During his time as chief of DOGE, Musk aimed to instill a culture of efficiency within government operations. He emphasized that the department’s mission is intended to evolve into a sustained approach to reduce fiscal waste.
His departure follows his recent public critique of President Trump's signature spending bill, which Musk said increases the budget deficit and undermines DOGE’s efforts. Musk remarked, "A bill can be big, or it can be beautiful. But I don't know if it can be both. My personal opinion."
Musk was a prominent supporter of Trump's 2024 campaign, serving as the largest donor and a visible presence during the election cycle. Trump publicly praised Musk, calling him "a star" during his victory speech.
Throughout his tenure, Musk recruited highly skilled individuals dedicated to rigorous cost-cutting efforts, leading to significant reductions in government payrolls and departmental downsizing. However, his methods and vision often clashed with other senior officials within the administration.
By late April, Musk began scaling back his involvement, citing that DOGE had become a scapegoat for broader criticisms of the administration and acknowledging that not all objectives had been met.
His leadership also attracted legal challenges; a U.S. District judge has ordered Musk to face a lawsuit alleging illegal use of authority during his tenure. Additional lawsuits seek to restrict DOGE’s access to sensitive government records containing personal and financial data of American citizens.
Meanwhile, Musk's focus has shifted increasingly toward his business ventures. Tesla has faced challenges including arson attacks on dealerships and a decline in share prices. SpaceX recently experienced a failure when the Starship exploded during its ninth test flight over the Indian Ocean. Furthermore, the platform X encountered a significant two-hour outage, which Musk acknowledged by stating, "As evidenced by the X uptime issues this week, major operational improvements need to be made."
