PM Modi Begins Historic Visit to Cyprus
Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a landmark two-day visit to Cyprus, aiming to bolster the ties between the two nations across trade, technology, security, and investment sectors. This visit marks the first time in over two decades that an Indian prime minister has set foot in Cyprus, signaling a renewed commitment to deepen bilateral engagement.
Warm Welcome and Strategic Dialogue
Upon arrival at Larnaca International Airport, Modi received a personal welcome from Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who described the visit as "historic" and the start of an expansive strategic partnership. The gesture underscored the significance both countries place on enhancing cooperation.
In his official messages, Modi expressed gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted his anticipation of expanding collaborations, especially in trade, investment, and technology. The Prime Minister shared, "India looks forward to deepening friendship with Cyprus," affirming the visit’s potential to inject fresh momentum into bilateral relations.
Building On Historic Bonds
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the shared values and aspirations underpinning India-Cyprus relations. Extensive discussions are planned to explore new areas of partnership, with a focus on security and technology innovation.
At his hotel, Modi was greeted by a vibrant Indian diaspora community chanting patriotic slogans, a heartening scene that reflected the enduring ties beyond borders. Modi later met with diaspora members, expressing appreciation and reinforcing his government's commitment to strengthening connections with Cyprus.
High-Level Engagements and Forward-Looking Agenda
Alongside President Christodoulides, Modi attended a business event in Limassol that facilitated dialogue around entrepreneurial collaboration and expanding economic ties. Concurrently, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos to further solidify diplomatic relations.
Modi's visit to Cyprus is the first leg of a three-nation tour that will continue with his participation in the G7 Summit in Canada and subsequent meetings in Croatia.
Focus on Shared Security and Global Cooperation
In statements before departing India, Modi underscored Cyprus’s role as an important partner within the Mediterranean and European Union contexts. The summit and bilateral meetings offer platforms to jointly address pressing issues like cross-border terrorism, with India seeking to galvanize global cooperation for a safer and more secure world.
Looking Ahead
This diplomatic journey is not just a reaffirmation of past ties but a strategic step toward expanding horizons between India and Cyprus in an increasingly interconnected global landscape. Through trade, technology, investment, and people-to-people exchanges, both nations aim to build a partnership that is mutually beneficial and future-ready.
