Russia is set to announce the next round of direct peace talks with Ukraine, according to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Speaking at a conference in Moscow on May 28, 2025, Lavrov stated that negotiations have progressed to an advanced stage from Russia’s side, with efforts focused on reaching a peace agreement.
One of Russia's primary demands remains Ukraine's neutrality. Lavrov emphasized this point as central to the discussions.
Addressing speculation about the Vatican potentially hosting the talks, Lavrov expressed reservations. He noted that since Russia and Ukraine are predominantly Orthodox countries, holding negotiations on Catholic territory would be inappropriate and uncomfortable for all parties involved.
“Imagine the Vatican as a venue for negotiations. It’s rather unseemly for Orthodox nations to discuss the elimination of root causes on a Catholic platform. I believe it would not be particularly comfortable for the Vatican either,” Lavrov said.
Earlier, on May 16, Russia and Ukraine resumed negotiations in Istanbul after more than three years. Both nations agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each and to begin drafting a framework that could lead to a ceasefire.
Additionally, following a recent call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, it was reported that the Vatican showed interest in hosting future talks.
