US General Highlights Pakistan's Key Role in Counterterrorism
In a recent congressional hearing, the commander of US Central Command, General Michael Kurilla, emphasized the critical importance of maintaining strong ties with both Pakistan and India. Rejecting the notion that US relations in South Asia must be exclusive, General Kurilla described Pakistan as a "phenomenal partner" in the ongoing battle against terrorism.
Collaborative Efforts Against ISIS-Khorasan
General Kurilla praised Pakistan's active counterterrorism operations against ISIS-Khorasan, noting that despite limited intelligence support from the US, Pakistani forces have successfully targeted and disrupted terror networks in the region. He remarked, "Through a phenomenal partnership with Pakistan, they have gone after ISIS-Khorasan, killing dozens of them and capturing high-value individuals."
The General highlighted the extradition of a key ISIS-K operative behind a major bombing, underscoring the close military coordination between US and Pakistani officials. He shared how the Pakistan Army chief personally informed him about the capture, reflecting the depth of collaboration.
Persistent Threats Along the Pakistan-Afghanistan Border
Explaining the complexity of the security landscape, General Kurilla noted that ISIS-K continues to be active along the volatile Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Since early 2024, Pakistan has endured over 1,000 terrorist attacks in its western regions, resulting in approximately 700 deaths and more than 2,500 injuries among security forces and civilians.
Despite these challenges, the Pakistani military remains engaged in an intense counterterrorism campaign, which the US commander commended as instrumental in weakening ISIS-K, describing their capabilities as having suffered a "very, very hard" blow in recent months.
Reaffirming the Need for Balanced US Relations in South Asia
Before concluding his testimony, General Kurilla made a pointed observation on US diplomatic strategy, advocating for a balanced relationship with both India and Pakistan. He emphasized that the US should not view ties with these two nations as a zero-sum game but rather assess each relationship on its merits.
