US General Highlights Crucial US Ties with Both Pakistan and India
In a recent congressional hearing, the head of the US Central Command, General Michael Kurilla, emphasized the indispensable nature of America's relationships with both Pakistan and India. Rejecting any notion of choosing one over the other, Kurilla underscored that Washington must maintain strong partnerships with both nations to effectively counter regional threats.
Pakistan’s Role as a ‘Phenomenal Partner’ Against ISIS-Khorasan
Describing Pakistan as a "phenomenal partner," General Kurilla praised Islamabad's active role in combatting the terrorist group ISIS-Khorasan. Despite relying on limited intelligence support from Washington, Pakistan's military has engaged vigorously in counterterrorism operations along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
Kurilla noted, "ISIS-Khorasan remains one of the most persistent groups attempting external attacks worldwide, including against the homeland. The Taliban and ISIS-K continue to clash, with many militants pushed into the Pakistani tribal regions. Through our partnership, Pakistan has launched effective operations, killing dozens and capturing at least five high-value ISIS-K members." He also highlighted the extradition of Jaffar, a key figure behind the Abbeygate bombing, to the United States as a significant milestone facilitated by Pakistani cooperation.
Significant Toll on Pakistan Amidst Counterterrorism Efforts
Since early 2024, Pakistan has faced over 1,000 terrorist assaults in its western regions, resulting in approximately 700 fatalities among security forces and civilians, with more than 2,500 injured. Despite these heavy losses, General Kurilla affirmed that Pakistan's commitment to fighting terrorism remains unwavering.
ISIS-K’s Weakened Position Along the Border
The general reported that ISIS-K operations have been significantly degraded over recent months. Although they continue to maintain some presence along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, their capabilities have been reduced considerably due to concerted efforts by Pakistani forces with US intelligence support.
Balancing US Partnerships: A Dual Approach
Perhaps most notably, General Kurilla made it clear that America's strategic interests necessitate engagement with both India and Pakistan simultaneously. "It is not a binary choice," he affirmed. "Our relationships with these nations should be based on their individual merits and contribution to regional stability." This stance signals Washington’s intent to sustain ties with Islamabad, even as it supports India’s own counterterrorism challenges.
What This Means For Regional Dynamics
General Kurilla’s testimony sends a message that the United States values Pakistan's role as a counterterrorism ally, recognizing its sacrifices and cooperation. At the same time, it acknowledges India’s crucial battle against terror threats originating from Pakistan, underscoring a nuanced diplomatic balance. Washington’s approach emphasizes collaboration over exclusivity, ensuring that both South Asian giants remain key partners in securing peace and combating extremism.
