US Embassy in Jerusalem to Remain Closed Until Friday
Amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, the US Department of State announced the closure of its embassy in Jerusalem from Wednesday, June 18, through Friday, June 20. This precautionary measure comes in response to a deteriorating security environment in the region.
The embassy closure also includes the consular offices in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Authorities cited guidance from Israel's Home Front Command as a reason for the temporary suspension of embassy operations, aiming to safeguard American personnel and interests.
Missile Threats from Iran Raise Alarm
Recent reports indicate that Iran has positioned missiles targeting US military bases across West Asia. This move reportedly serves as a deterrent against potential American involvement in the intensifying Israel-Iran conflict, warning of retaliatory strikes if Washington decides to engage directly.
These developments have fueled speculation regarding the US's next steps, with rumors suggesting that former President Donald Trump may be contemplating direct intervention in the conflict.
Trump Holds National Security Meeting
On Tuesday, President Trump convened a National Security Council meeting to discuss potential responses. A senior White House official remarked that the administration is awaiting Trump's final decision on whether to escalate US involvement.
Earlier, Trump notably stated that while the US possesses precise intelligence on Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, there is currently no intention to target him. He also claimed that the US has achieved "complete and total control" of Iranian airspace, hinting at possible future military actions.
US Establishes Dedicated Middle East Task Force
In light of the growing instability, the State Department has set up a 24/7 Middle East Task Force dedicated to coordinating support for American citizens and diplomatic personnel in the region. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce disclosed during a press briefing that the task force has been operational for over a week, facilitating timely communication and assistance.
To date, the department has issued more than 30 security alerts and updated travel advisories for countries including Iraq and Israel, underscoring the seriousness of the situation on the ground.
What Lies Ahead?
With tensions between Israel and Iran continuing to rise, and the US carefully weighing its options, the coming days will be critical. The closure of the US embassy in Jerusalem, coupled with missile threats and strategic military positioning, signals a period of heightened caution as all parties monitor developments closely.
