World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Commemorated in Mayithara
On June 15, 2025, the Social Justice Department hosted a meaningful event at the Government Old Age Home in Mayithara to honor World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The program aimed to shed light on the pressing need to protect and respect the elderly population.
A Call for Respect and Protection of Elders
The ceremony was officially opened by Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, who spoke passionately about society’s duty towards its senior citizens. Highlighting the importance of collective responsibility, he emphasized that elderly individuals should never face hardships, whether at home or in the broader community.
“It is crucial for everyone, especially the younger generation, to appreciate the value of caring for our elders. From school days onward, instilling this respect will foster a more compassionate society,” said Minister Prasad. He also noted the government's ongoing efforts to implement initiatives that ensure the welfare and dignity of elderly citizens.
Minister Prasad reminded the youth to recognize that aging is a universal journey, urging them to treat older family members with kindness and to actively contribute to their happiness and well-being.
Community Involvement and Awareness Activities
The event featured a torch-lit rally, drawing attention to elder abuse issues and rallying public support for stronger protections. The rally was presided over by V.G. Mohanan, president of the Kanjikuzhy block panchayat, who stressed community engagement as a pivotal element in creating safe environments for seniors.
Building a Culture of Compassion
As society continues to evolve, initiatives like this play a vital role in promoting respect for older adults. Awareness events and government programs combined encourage a culture where seniors are valued, safe, and supported.
The observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Mayithara is a timely reminder to all generations of the importance of empathy, protection, and the enduring respect owed to the elderly.
