Celebrating World Oceans Day at INCOIS
On June 9, 2025, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad hosted a significant event marking World Oceans Day. The gathering brought together scientists, researchers, and academicians to discuss the vital role oceans play in sustaining biological productivity, especially in the face of climate change and global warming.
Focus on Ocean Warming and Coastal Resilience
The discussions centered around the shifting dynamics of ocean ecosystems influenced by rising global temperatures. Experts emphasized the urgent need to strengthen coastal resilience and the cooperative efforts required between research bodies, academic institutions, and coastal communities.
Keynote Address and Notable Speakers
Goa University's Vice-Chancellor, Harilal Menon, delivered a compelling talk entitled “From coastline to community: partnering for resilience in an ocean warming scenario”, stressing collaborative strategies to mitigate the impact of warming oceans on coastal livelihoods.
INCOIS Director T.M. Balakrishnan Nair, along with scientists Hasibur Rahaman, N. Suresh Kumar, and Trishneeta Bhattacharya, and Telangana Higher Education Council Chairman V. Balakista Reddy, also shared insights on ongoing research and the importance of integrating scientific knowledge with community action.
Bridging Science and Community Action
The event underscored the imperative of multidisciplinary collaboration to address the multifaceted challenges oceans face today. By fostering partnerships among stakeholders, the scientific community aims to drive sustainable solutions that support both environmental health and coastal populations.
World Oceans Day at INCOIS served as a timely reminder of the ocean's critical role in our planet's future and the collective responsibility to safeguard it.
