Angels’ World: A Unique Community Home for Neurodivergent Children in Thiruvananthapuram

Introduction to Angels’ World

Tucked away in Mannanthala, Thiruvananthapuram, Angels’ World stands as a pioneering community living project, crafted by parents of neurodivergent children, primarily those on the autism spectrum. This multi-storied residential complex deviates from the conventional apartment model by providing an inclusive and supportive environment for young adults beyond typical therapy age.

Origins and Vision of the Project

Angels’ World was conceptualized by a group of ten families who shared concerns about their children’s futures in the absence of adequate support infrastructures. Initially starting as a day care center in Pattoor in 2021, the project expanded with the purchase of land in 2022 and subsequent construction of the dedicated residential facility. The initiative is managed by Angels’ World Charitable Trust, which focuses on fostering an engaging daily routine emphasizing skill development through entertainment, physical activity, and social interaction.

Key Features of the Facility

  • Size: 25,000 sq ft built on 50 cents of land
  • Residences: Apartments with three bedrooms, customized to family preferences
  • Facilities: Classrooms, sensory and computer training rooms, swimming pool, play areas (indoor and outdoor), dormitory, communal kitchen and dining halls
  • Recreational Amenities: Gymnasium, home theatre, and spaces for physical activities like Zumba and dance

Living Experience and Community Support

Currently, two families reside permanently, four utilize the apartments on weekends, and the others plan gradual relocation. The community dynamic is strengthened by shared caregiving responsibilities among parents and trained professionals, ensuring continuity of care and comfort for the children.

The collective approach not only alleviates parental anxieties about long-term care but also promotes social awareness, independence, and improved communication among residents. The presence of attentive teachers and caregivers plays a crucial role in motivating participation and facilitating progress in various areas.

Impact on Children and Families

Parents report significant positive changes in their children’s behavior and wellbeing. Examples include enhanced social interaction, improved response to communication, increased participation in physical activities, and a general uplift in mood and engagement levels.

For instance, children who were previously reluctant to engage now participate in music, writing, and social outings. Health improvements have also been observed, particularly in those benefiting from gym and exercise routines, often addressing issues related to sedentary lifestyles and medication side effects.

A Model of Inclusive Care

Angels’ World embodies a model that shifts focus from ‘fixing’ autism to providing understanding and support tailored to individual ways of being. The project also accommodates up to 30 day scholars, expanding its reach and reinforcing its commitment to community integration and sustainability.
