At Least 15 Dead in Intense 9-Hour Russian Attack on Kyiv
On Tuesday, Kyiv endured a relentless series of missile and drone strikes launched by Russian forces, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people and injuring dozens more. The capital witnessed its deadliest bombardment since the conflict escalated in 2022.
Widespread Devastation Across Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that an entire section of an apartment building was obliterated in the attack, with emergency crews scrambling beneath the rubble in a desperate search for potential survivors. Over 27 locations in Kyiv were reportedly hit, as confirmed by Interior Minister Igor Klymenko.
Civilians scattered to nearby metro stations, seeking refuge amid the chaos. Many spent the night on mats, anxiously sharing updates about the drone and missile threats or quietly comforting their pets. For many, the experience was harrowing. “It was probably the most hellish night in my memory for our neighbourhood,” remarked 20-year-old student Alina Shtompel. “It is indescribably painful that our people are going through this right now.”
Nationwide Assault Extends Beyond Kyiv
The strikes were not confined to Kyiv alone. Russia also targeted the southern port city of Odesa, where the attacks claimed one life and left 10 individuals critically wounded. Further assaults on the regions of Sumy and Kherson resulted in two additional fatalities.
Zelenskyy’s Call for Global Response
President Zelenskyy disclosed that the Russian offensive involved an overwhelming use of 440 drones and 32 missiles in a single day. He implored the international community not to ignore the aggression, emphasizing that the Kremlin’s leader continues these attacks simply because he can afford to sustain the war.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin does this solely because he can afford to continue the war. He wants the war to go on,” Zelenskyy stated.
Condemnation From Ukrainian Officials
Top Ukrainian figures joined the president in harshly criticizing global leaders for what they perceive as a muted response. Presidential aide Andriy Yermak denounced the attacks as deliberate targeting of civilians, stating on social media,
“This is how Russia fights – it kills civilians in ordinary homes, deliberately. This is how autocracies fight…. A nuclear power can simply kill civilians in homes, refuse to cease fire, and not receive the necessary reaction from the civilized world. Why? And how many more of our people and children must die?”
A Community Resilient Amid Tragedy
Despite the damage and loss of life, the people of Kyiv continue to demonstrate resilience. Emergency teams and volunteers remain steadfast, aiding those affected while the city grapples with the ongoing threat.
The day’s barrage stands as a sobering reminder of the devastating toll the conflict has had on civilians and the urgent need for the world to respond decisively.
