Greta Thunberg Embarks on Humanitarian Voyage to Gaza
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg set sail on Sunday aboard the Madleen, a vessel operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), delivering crucial humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. The shipment includes essential supplies such as milk, protein bars, baby formula, diapers, flour, rice, water filters, hygiene products, and medical equipment.
Gaza's Ongoing Blockade and Humanitarian Crisis
Gaza has been under a stringent blockade by Israel since 2007, involving strict land, sea, and air restrictions. The blockade has been in place for over 90 days following recent escalations, severely limiting access to vital resources for the region's inhabitants.
Israeli Military Response and Preparedness
An Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, Brigadier General Effie Defrin, announced that Israel is prepared to respond to the flotilla’s attempt to reach Gaza. He emphasized that recent operational experience equips the military to act as necessary but did not specify potential measures against the arriving vessel.
International Activists Join the Mission
The current expedition comprises 12 international activists, including Greta Thunberg and actor Liam Cunningham, known for his work on Game of Thrones. The group characterizes their mission as a non-violent direct action challenging the blockade and condemning escalating violations allegedly constituting war crimes.
Security Concerns During the Voyage
While traveling from Catania, Italy, the flotilla reported being trailed by drones, believed to be operated by the Greek Coast Guard. Activists have appealed to the international community to vigilantly ensure their safety throughout the journey.
Personal Commitment and Symbolism
Throughout the voyage, Ms. Thunberg has actively shared moments including herself wrapped in a keffiyeh, carrying a Palestinian flag, and swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. In a heartfelt statement before departure, she declared, "No matter the odds we face, we must keep trying because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity", visibly moved during her speech.
Previous Incidents Involving FFC Vessels
Prior to Ms. Thunberg’s departure, another vessel affiliated with the FFC was reportedly damaged just before reaching Malta, where it was to pick her up for a similar mission. The organization accused Israeli forces of targeting that ship with drones, underscoring the operation’s high-risk nature.
