Humanitarian Mission Sets Sail to Gaza Amid Crisis
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, and European Parliament member Rima Hassan are preparing to embark on a humanitarian mission to Gaza. The group, alongside other activists, will board the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's ship, "Madleen," departing from Catania, Sicily, this weekend. Their objective is to deliver essential supplies and challenge what they describe as Israel's blockade impacting Palestinian access to food and aid.
Background and Previous Attempts
This voyage marks the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's (FFC) second recent attempt to reach Gaza. In May, their vessel "Conscience" faced an alleged drone attack while navigating international waters near Malta, forcing an aborted mission. The attack caused significant damage to the ship, with the FFC attributing responsibility to Israel, which has not publicly confirmed or denied involvement.
United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has urged caution for the "Madleen" passengers, calling for international protection measures.
Actor Liam Cunningham's Advocacy
At 63, Liam Cunningham, known for his role as Davos Seaworth—the "Onion Knight"—in the acclaimed series Game of Thrones, has long supported Palestinian causes. His character's legacy as a smuggler who delivered vital supplies during conflict parallels Cunningham's current humanitarian effort.
Expressing concern over global inaction, Cunningham emphasized, "The option to say you didn't know is not an option, you did know and you did nothing, you stayed quiet."
Greta Thunberg’s Call for Global Action
Greta Thunberg, aged 20, condemned the international community's silence on the crisis. She stated, "The world cannot be silent bystanders. This silence and passivity that we are seeing from most of the world is deadly." Thunberg underscored the urgency of the situation, highlighting the systematic starvation of approximately 2 million Palestinians and stressing that everyone has a moral duty to support a free Palestine.
Gaza’s Escalating Food Crisis
Since March 2, following the expiration of a ceasefire with Hamas, Israel has imposed a comprehensive blockade on humanitarian and commercial supplies entering Gaza. This blockade coincides with resumed military operations aimed at pressuring Hamas to release hostages reportedly held in Gaza.
Despite international pressure, a partial lifting of the blockade last week has allowed only minimal aid into Gaza—represented as a "drop in the ocean" by United Nations officials. As a result, thousands of Palestinians face severe food shortages and risks of starvation.
