Arrest Made in Shooting of Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe
The man believed to be behind the attempted assassination of Colombian Senator and 2026 presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe was arrested on Saturday, nearly a month after the attack rocked the nation. Authorities confirmed the arrest of Élder José Arteaga Hernández, also known by the aliases “Chipi” and “Costeño.”
Details of the Attack
On June 7, while campaigning near a park in Bogotá, the conservative senator was shot twice in the head from behind during a public speech. Uribe, 33, was immediately rushed to intensive care and has undergone multiple surgeries since the shooting. He had proclaimed his ambition to run in Colombia’s 2026 presidential election last October and had quickly become one of President Gustavo Petro’s most outspoken critics since taking office as a senator in 2022.
Investigation and Arrests
The Colombian police charged Hernández with several serious offenses, including attempted aggravated homicide, illegal manufacturing and trafficking of firearms, and using minors in criminal activities. Authorities revealed that Hernández had recruited a 15-year-old boy to carry out the shooting. The teenager, who had been arrested earlier, pleaded not guilty during the investigation.
National Police Director Major General Carlos Fernando Triana confirmed Hernández’s capture in a northwestern Bogotá neighborhood. The arrest is part of a broader crackdown, as three others have been detained for their roles in coordinating and executing the attack. In addition, Interpol issued a red notice against Hernández on Friday, signaling the international seriousness of the case.
Background on Miguel Uribe
Coming from a notable political family, Uribe is linked to Colombia’s Liberal Party. His father was known both as a union leader and businessman. Tragically, his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was killed in 1991 during a rescue attempt after she was kidnapped by the Medellin drug cartel — a painful chapter that has shaped Uribe’s political journey.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind this chilling attack. The attempt on Uribe's life represents a significant escalation in political violence and raises concerns about security during the upcoming election cycle.
The nation watches closely as the case unfolds, hoping for justice and a safer democratic environment.
