During a joint press briefing in Zagreb, Croatia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended sincere thanks to the Croatian government for their solidarity following the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. "We agree that terrorism is the enemy of humanity and goes against the forces that stand for democracy," Modi remarked, underscoring the shared condemnation of violence.
Building Stronger India-Europe Relations
PM Modi emphasized the importance of deepening ties between India and Europe, highlighting Croatia's pivotal role in enhancing cooperation. "The India-Europe partnership is increasingly vital in today’s complex global landscape," he said. "Croatia’s support is key to strengthening our strategic engagement with the European Union." This cooperation, he noted, extends across various sectors and underpins their joint commitment to peace and democracy.
Croatia Reaffirms Commitment Against Terrorism
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković echoed Modi's sentiments, expressing sorrow over the Pahalgam tragedy and reaffirming Croatia’s understanding of India’s resolve. "Terrorism remains the biggest threat to global stability," Plenković stated. He also highlighted the volatile security situation worldwide, stressing the responsibility of leading nations to work toward peace.
Expanding Cooperation
Looking ahead, the two leaders agreed to boost collaboration across diverse domains including defence, nuclear energy, shipbuilding, and information technology. Prime Minister Plenković recognized India’s leadership in the IT sector as a key element in future partnerships.
Background: The Pahalgam Terror Attack and Response
The tragic event on April 22 saw Pakistan-backed terrorists targeting tourists in Pahalgam, resulting in the death of 26 people. In retaliation, India launched precise strikes as part of Operation Sindoor on May 7 against terror camps in Pakistan-administered territories.
Following India's response, Pakistan attempted military strikes on Indian bases between May 8 and 10, prompting a vigorous counterattack. The conflict concluded on May 10 with an understanding to cease hostilities after intense cross-border exchanges involving drones and missiles.
A United Stand Against Terrorism
This high-level dialogue in Croatia not only reaffirmed India’s commitment to combat terrorism but also signaled a unified front from international allies. The cooperation between India and Croatia exemplifies a broader effort to uphold democratic values and fight against threats that undermine global security.
