The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, celebrated his 90th birthday on Saturday, embracing his identity as a “simple Buddhist monk” and emphasizing the vital importance of compassion, kindness, and inner peace in today’s world. The milestone was commemorated in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, where well-wishers and dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extended their heartfelt greetings.

A Humble Reflection on a Significant Day

In a message shared during the festivities, the Dalai Lama reflected on the occasion with humility, noting that he typically does not focus on birthdays for himself. Instead, he finds meaning when these moments are used to inspire altruism and kindness among people.

“On my 90th birthday, I know that many well-wishers and friends, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations. I’m grateful that many of you are using this time to promote compassion, kindness, and altruism.”

He continued, “I am just a simple Buddhist monk and don’t normally celebrate birthdays. However, since you are organising events around this day, I’d like to share some thoughts.”

Promoting Inner Peace and Universal Compassion

The Dalai Lama stressed that while material progress holds value, priority should also be placed on nurturing peace of mind through cultivating a kind heart and a compassionate outlook—not only toward family and friends but toward all beings.

He believes this approach greatly contributes to making the world a better, more harmonious place.

Furthermore, he reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to advancing human values, fostering religious harmony, and preserving Tibetan culture and heritage, which he views as significant to global peace efforts. Drawing inspiration from the teachings of the Buddha and Indian sages such as Shantideva, the Dalai Lama shared a poignant aspiration:

“As long as space endures,
As long as sentient beings remain,
May I too remain
To help dispel the misery of the world.”
