Dalai Lama Affirms Long-Term Service Despite Succession Rumors
As his 90th birthday approaches, the Dalai Lama has decisively put to rest speculation about his succession, declaring his intention to continue serving as a spiritual leader for the next three to four decades. Speaking at a long-life prayer ceremony held at Tsuglagkhang temple in McLeodganj, he emphasized feeling reassured by divine signs and the blessings of Avalokiteshvara.
“Looking at the many prophecies, I feel I have blessings of the Avalokiteshvara. I have done my best so far. I hope to still live for 30-40 years more. Your prayers have borne fruit so far,” the Dalai Lama told the gathered devotees on July 5.
Steadfast Leadership Amid Political Uncertainty
The Tibetan spiritual leader’s remarks come amid ongoing uncertainty about the future of Tibetan religious guidance, particularly in light of China’s claim over the authority to name his successor. Yet, the Dalai Lama remains firm, insisting that no external power has the right to determine his reincarnation.
“Though we have lost our country and we are living in exile in India, that’s where I have been able to benefit beings quite a lot. Those living here in Dharamshala. I intend to benefit and serve beings as much as I can,” he said, highlighting his dedication despite the challenges faced by Tibetans in exile.
Reaffirming the Tradition of Succession
Earlier this week, the Dalai Lama clarified that the centuries-old tradition of identifying the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation will persist through the Gaden Phodrang Trust, a non-profit established by his office, which he granted sole authority over recognizing his successor.
This stance drew swift criticism from China, which maintains that any future reincarnation must conform to its domestic regulations and receive official endorsement. A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman reiterated Beijing’s insistence on controlling the succession process.
India's Position and Spiritual Autonomy
On the other side, Indian officials underscore the spiritual and cultural importance of upholding established Tibetan conventions. Indian Union Minister Kiren Rijiju underscored that the decision rests solely with the current Dalai Lama and relevant Tibetan Buddhist institutions, not any external government.
“Reincarnation has to be decided by the established conventions and the desire of the present Dalai Lama. No one else has the right to decide on the next Dalai Lama. It is the most important defining institution for all the Tibetans and all those who follow the Nalanda tradition of Buddhism,” Rijiju remarked.
Looking Ahead to the 90th Birthday Celebrations
As McLeodganj prepares to celebrate this landmark birthday with dignitaries and followers, the Dalai Lama’s message resounds as one of unwavering commitment to his spiritual mission. His pledge to continue guiding and serving his community underscores the lasting impact of his leadership — both as a religious figure and as a symbol of Tibetan resilience in exile.
