Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced at the company's annual shareholder meeting that its generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) assistant is now used by one billion people every month across Meta's platforms.
This milestone underscores Meta's growing presence in the competitive Gen AI landscape, where it contends with technology giants such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. Zuckerberg emphasized the impact of Meta AI, which powers features integrated across Meta's family of apps, including the newly launched standalone Meta AI assistant app revealed at the end of April.
The dedicated Meta AI app is designed to serve as a personalized AI assistant, primarily accessible via voice interactions. It aims to provide tailored experiences to individual users. Meta Chief Financial Officer Susan Li highlighted that the fastest growth in AI usage is occurring on WhatsApp, one of the company’s flagship messaging platforms.
Meanwhile, Google's CEO Sundar Pichai shared that Google's AI Overviews, introduced in search results, now engage more than 1.5 billion users. Google’s Gemini AI app also boasts over 400 million monthly users, reflecting intense competition in delivering accessible AI experiences.
Despite rapid advancements, industry leaders acknowledge ongoing challenges such as mitigating misinformation, refining business models, and understanding societal impacts of AI technologies.
Meta aims to deepen user engagement with its AI offerings throughout 2025, striving to position Meta AI as the leading personal AI assistant in the market.
